Flyers are a powerful marketing tools for your business or event. Printed marketing materials give you a chance to create an artistic representation of who you are or what you are offering.
When you make a beautifully designed flyer you can very easily attract potential clients through eye catching images and appealing typography, this is your opportunity to dream big and let your imagination run wild.
Attractive flyers, leaflets and pamphlets are great for use at conferences, trade shows and in all of your outdoor marketing efforts. Despite being small in size, they can convey a strong message. A good flyer captures the eye of the viewer and promotes that message.
Now I want you to think about all of the printed promotional materials that you have seen over the last couple of weeks. Do you remember any details about what you saw, or even better yet, did you keep any? What we are discussing is creating a desirable yet unforgettable call to action. To design a flyer that is effective, there are a few things you should include and use correctly for your flyer to reach the maximum intended audience.
• Organize your page with boxes, borders and areas of contrasting colors
• Identify the selling points
• Make your points easily identifiable
• Don’t get too complicated
• Focus on the benefits
• Limit yourself to two different fonts
• Spend time on concise wording
• Choose your printing suppliers well

Just when they might have forgotten you, here appear some great new offers from your business that suddenly remind them what a useful resource you are!

Anyone can have promotional flyers designed for their business. They don’t need to necessarily have a vast product range, just offer different specials and sales with time limits and keep your phones ringing.

One of the most recent design jobs I did was a full colour A4 flyer for a crane truck company. They had an existing logo which they wanted to feature in the header of the flyer, though it had to be re-created as they couldn’t supply the logo file. Then they had a whole heap of photos they wanted to include on a single page layout.
Some of the photos were quite dark, taken early in the morning I suspect, so each photo had to be individually treated in Photoshop to try and get a reasonably consistent level of lighting throughout the page. It should be noted though that if a photo is really dark, too much lightening can affect the quality of the image. Ideally you would have plenty of light on the raw image to begin with in most cases.
A little bit of Photoshop work was also required on the bottom image to remove signage from a company they no longer work with. See if you can pick where that was altered..

I was recently designing some flyers for letterbox drops and had some interesting feedback. Unless you’re out there yourself dropping the flyers in each mailbox, you may not realize that the size of the brochure really needs to be designed appropriately to fit in the slots of the mailbox without having to squash and bend it unnecessarily.
If you think about it, an A4 size brochure is never going to fit into a mail box slot, even though this is a very standard sized brochure. You can still have an A4 brochure, but the trick is to design it as a 3 panel – folded to DL. DL (210 x 99mm) will fit very nicely into a mailbox, and can also fit into a DL envelope which is the standard envelope size most people use. This could be very handy if you want to use the post to mail them out instead of dropping the flyers off by hand as well.
Another standard sized flyer is A5 (half an A4). But we have found that although some mailboxes are wide enough to fit in an A5, many are not, and an A5 flyer will often have to be bent and squashed to fit in. This can really ruin the effect of a well designed flyer if it arrives to the potential customer all squished up.
So my advice, for mailbox drops send out DL flyers, or A4 folded to DL 3 panel, or if you really need to send out an A3 brochure, have it folded down to DL beforehand with the proper folding machines so that it still looks professional.
